WE THE YOUTHS CAN SAVE NIGERIA

History is advantageous. It exposes us to what has happened in the past, so that we may prevent every avoidable mistakes or errors committed by those who were before us. But do we need to go back to the class to study history as a subject? No. All we need to do is to ensure that we always keep ourselves informed about what’s happening in the world around us. From the history, I realized that many years back Nigeria was doing well as a Nation, at least to an extent. Despite the fact that I didn’t witness those years, I still believe strongly in the story, not because my parent told us the story, but because I knew that Nigeria wouldn’t have been given such a gigantic chieftaincy tittle as the ‘Giant of Africa’ if not that the Nation was really doing fine that time. In those days, things were going pretty smoothly for the Nation, simply because ‘all hands are on deck’ to make sure that Nigeria was growing.

Everyone was working earnestly in accordance with one of the lines of our National pledge which says ‘..to service Nigeria with all my strength.’ The farmers were busy with their works to ensure that there is enough food for local consumption and for export. The teachers were teaching to impart necessary knowledge on the students to give the Nation best, reliable and employable set of graduates. Those occupying various offices were also doing their jobs as expected. In fact, the government was not left out in the effort to ensure that Nigeria grow to an enviable height.

And truly the Nation was growing. Nigeria was able to feed her citizens through agricultural practices and the Nation also exports products such as cocoa, coffee, oil palm and many others. With our true commitment in agriculture, everything was going well because God has bestowed us with a fertile land which supports all sort of agricultural crops.

Again, our creator proved to us how much he loves Nigeria through crude oil exploration. And in my little perspicacity, I think the oil exploration suppose to be a great blessing to our Nation and a strong catalyst for Nation building. I hope you agree with me? But unfortunately, reverse is the case. This is melancholic. What then has eventuated to Nigeria’s present predicament? Series of bad governments. In the early 1970s, Nigeria began to experience a steep drop in agricultural production while relying solely on oil revenue. Whereas according to history, Nigeria had been the world’s lead exporter of cocoa, but production of this cash crop dropped by 43%, while productivity in other important income generators like rubber (29%), groundnuts (64%), and cotton (65%) dropped as well between 1972 and 1983. The decline in agricultural production was not limited to cash crops amid the oil boom, and national output of staple foodstuffs also fell. The drop in production was so substantial that by the early 1980s the (Shagari’s) NPN government was forced to implement a now notorious import license scheme which essentially involved Nigeria, for the first time in its history, importing basic food items. That’s the onset of Nigeria’s atrophy. Today, we’re all suffering from the consequence of actions of our shallow minded leaders with myopic or lack of vision. They were blindfolded by the ‘quick money’ flowing from oil revenue, thereby abandoned agriculture and other aspects of the economy. After years of prodigiously wasteful spending and embezzlement, without any reservation, they rendered Nigeria impecunious. Now our Nation is experiencing economic recession. There is hunger everywhere. The youths are jobless. Hardship now flooded the land which was once known as a land of milk and honey. What then can we do in a situation like this?
The youths could save this Nation. Several people have suggested different possible solutions to the present Nigeria’s condition. But today, I want to add my own proposition to the list. But my suggestion is directed to individual (most especially, the youths), in contrast to the various suggested solutions directed to the government. And mine is very simple. in fact, it may sounds too simple to be taken as a solution. But it is actually one. “Use your gift”. That’s it. If everyone of us could be doing what we know how to do, Nigeria will rise again. Thank God for the recent trait among the youths, the harsh condition has forced many of us to be utilizing our cognitive skills to make things happen. We now produce many local products. I now see talented youths exploring their talents, and making something helpful with them. Those who have the gift to sing are now singing, those who know how to act are now acting. Many who can play musical instruments are now doing well in that aspect. If we can put more efforts in doing what we know to do and using our talents, no doubt that this Nation will rise again. Where are the inventors of our time? We need you. Nigerians are talented and educated enough to be inventors. The Wright brothers who invented the Aircraft didn’t go to the university, not even Polytechnic (OND). Nigeria is in need of you this time more than ever before. Let come together to build this Nation. We want to be proud of our made in Nigeria products. Do you make shoes? Please continue making it. Are you a talented writer? Please write to address important issues that may bring positive changes to Nigeria. If you are a good fashion designer, please make stylish clothes for us. Anything you know how to do, please start doing it now for the development of our dear country—Nigeria. If our Nation is not strong enough to help us at this moment, let us change our thinking to how we can help our Nation.
It is my belief that if we, the youths, can stand up and determine to rescue this Nation, we will definitely achieve that. We are youths. We have the strength. The knowledge is there. We are skillful and highly creative. With our strength, knowledge, skills and creativity, we can save this Nation. Let commence the ‘rescue mission’ now!

  1. I totally agree with this post! Unfortunately, the people of the younger generation are relying on our parents (or grandparents) to rule Nigeria but eventually they are going to pass away. The future is LITERALLY in our hands. Young people need to get more involved in our government and start building a better Nigeria.
